| Center Ranch resides on upwards of 9,000 acres in Leon County, Texas. The initial purchase was in 1987, consisting of 130 acres at the Southwest corner of SH 7 and FM 811 in Centerville. That location has expanded more or less continuously with relatively small purchases and now occupies approximately 2,500 acres. We refer to it as "Headquarters" which houses the main office, the feedmill, the (cattle) showbarn and the sale barn. Attached to the Headquarter working pens, there is a laboratory used primarily for embryo collection and transfer. Located at the same site with Headquarters, there is the Horse Quarters (which houses the office and the equine arm of CVRS and the Center Ranch equine breeding facility), the breaking barn and training facility, the Sam Welch Memorial Arena, and "hindquarters" where owner, Finis Welch stays when he is lucky enough to sleep at the ranch. The ranch includes a number of outlying facilities, where cattle are pastured, calves are reared and bulls are developed. Their stocker operation offers commercial replacement heifers as well and has the capacity to run roughly 4,000 head at any time. Further South on FM 811, there is "Keechi," a beautiful place located on Keechi Creek, and nearby, there is the Trinity River Division, a gorgeous 2,700 acre stretch south of Highway 7 which boasts over 3 miles of Trinity River frontage. North and Northeast of Headquarters, there is "Buffalo Creek" and "Stanmire". Buffalo Creek includes two camphouses and is considered our best location for hunting (deer, hogs, and duck). It is located on its namesake, Buffalo Creek, although Red Oak Branch and Alligator Creek also run through the place. The Stanmire place, also known as "The River Bottom", passes within a few yards of Stanmire Lake and borders the Trinity River for 1,100 feet. Hunting should be great at Stanmire, but in the 20 years since it has been part of Center Ranch, it has not been tested. |
